Corsica Ferries invests in NEOLINE Armateur, to co-finance its first Neoliner, a main wind-powered ro-ro cargo ship

Corsica Ferries announces that it is entering the capital of the company NEOLINE Armateur, which will build a 136-meter long cargo ship mainly propelled by the wind to save more than 80% fuel compared to a conventional ro-ro ship. A coherent investment for the company with the yellow ferries, which has been committed for years to limiting its environmental impact and preserving the marine environment: eco-navigation, particle filters, lighter fuels, reduction in ship speed, optimization of crossings, protection of cetaceans, offsetting incompressible carbon emissions through reforestation in Corsica and Amazonia (Pur Projet programme), etc.

Abolition of plastics on board long before the regulations, supplies in short circuits mainly in Corsica, use of fuel very low in sulfur and soon electrification at the quay, Corsica Ferries has for years been committed to limiting its carbon footprint.

After becoming a partner in the Sunrhyse project, the production of green hydrogen which will supply the fuel cells of the port of Brégaillon to electrically connect its ships to the quay , the company is taking a new step in the process of decarbonizing maritime transport.

It announces today that it has taken a stake in NEOLINE Armateur, in order to co-finance the 1st NEOLINER sail-powered cargo ship.

“After very early limiting our carbon footprint as much as possible, it is now essential to turn to alternatives to fossil fuels. New options are opening up today with green hydrogen and sail propulsion. As a responsible shipowner, we have a duty to support the energy transition by supporting these solutions of the future, veritable laboratories for the propulsion of tomorrow's maritime transport.” comments Pierre Mattei, President of Corsica Ferries, the world's 10th largest ferry company in terms of passenger transport capacity.

"We are very happy to be able to count on the support of Corsica Ferries, which has completed the round of investors necessary for the construction of the first NEOLINER vessel, and we thank Pierre Mattei and Corsica Ferries for their trust and their commitment to reducing the impact of maritime transport. This investment by a recognized shipowner illustrates the very strong interest aroused by sailing propulsion, the potential of which will be demonstrated with this first vessel. adds Jean Zanuttini , president of NEOLINE Développement.

The 136 meters long of the first NEOLINER freighter will be propelled by sail thanks to the Solid Sail rig of the Chantiers de l'Atlantique, consisting of two 75 m masts for 3,000 m² of rigid sails. A major innovation since the self-supporting and automatically steerable rig can be rotated 360°.

The largest current maritime transport project combining a loading capacity for light freight and oversized packages (up to 9.8m high) without the need for lifting, the new generation Ro-ro will offer a capacity of 1200 linear meters, 400 cars or 265 containers representing up to 5,000 tons of goods.

The first transport line plans to link St-Nazaire to the American East Coast (Halifax/Baltimore), via St-Pierre and Miquelon. At a commercial speed of 11 knots, the line, which combines energy savings and optimization of transport times, has already received firm commitments from shippers such as Renault Group, Groupe Beneteau, Manitou Group, Clarins, Hennessy, Longchamp and Michelin.
